FEDERATIONS AND ELITE ATHLETES
The Federations and Elite Athletes Department (FEAD) is mandated to drive the activities of all the National Sports Federations to facilitate sports development in Nigeria. FEAD was established vide letter No. OHCSF/MSD/592/110 dated 3rd June 2009; the letter included an approved report containing schedules of duties and mandates of each of the six (6) departments and units of the Sports Development Arm.
The major roles/functions of the department are to provide administrative and management services to National Sports Federations, the Department as a matter of responsibility, directs, coordinates, review the budgets of each Federation, and also consistently carry out monitoring and supervision of the activities and programmes of all the Federations locally and internationally.
a) Initiate policies on National Sports Federations and Elite Athletes sports;
b) Coordinate the activities of National Federations;
c) Coordinate Olympic sports to which Nigeria is affiliated as a voting member;
d) Identify and develop elite athletes;
e) Ensure sustainable sports development in the country;
f) Develop and classify coaches to ensure athletes have the right basic and advance skills;
g) Regulate coaching as a profession and develop a data bank for Coaches.
h) Ensure adequate preparation and participation of Senior National Teams at National, Continental and international Competitions/Games.
STRUCTURE OF THE DEPARTMENT
The department has three divisions, each headed by a Deputy Director. The divisions are: National Sports Federations, Elite Athletes Development and Coaching.
